Site Council Meeting

March 14, 2006 - Minutes

Attendees:  Bobbie Jaffe, Laura DeRose, Shawn Doan, Michelle Nilsen, Kathleen Nolan, Craig Ferguson, Jane Wynn

Minutes approved from February 14 meeting by consensus.

Principal’s report:

Phillis Textor was unable to attend the meeting.  On her behalf, Michele Nilsen asked that the Site Council rate five proposals for above baseline requests.  This was a difficult task because the council did not know how much money, if any, might be available to fund the proposals.    Another difficulty was that the proposals were to be rated by department requests, but because there would probably be such a limited amount of money available, the council chose to recommend only partial funding for some of the department requests.  The proposals were rated as follows:

  1. English support class materials for $741
  2. Citizenship – replace the 25 year old books
  3. Language lab
  4. Camera for math classes
  5. Washer/dryer

There was a discussion about new course offerings for the 2006-2007 school year.  After much discussion, council members agreed that at the April Site Council meeting we should discuss the development of a standard process for all new class offerings.

Update on Site Council terms for 2006-2007 school year:

Terms that expire:  Michele, Craig, Laura and Polly and student reps

Continuing members for one year: Jane, Sean, Kathleen

Bobbie’s position is elected by the PTSA.

Recommended that there be an announcement of openings for the Site Council parent representative positions at the 8th grade parent night and in the Mariner Memo.  In addition, recommended that, if possible, we change the process for electing student representatives to assure that the elected students attend the council meetings.

PTSA Report:

Bobbie Jaffe reported that the three high schools are rethinking the Umbrella Fest because it was a lot of work without raising a lot of money.  At the April 3 general meeting the Bellingham Police Department will talk about MySpace.com

Counseling Report:

Michele Nilsen reported that registration for current 9 – 11th graders starts on Monday.  The counselors are meeting with 8th graders at the middle schools and private schools over the next few weeks.

Student/Parent Handbook:

This will be discussed at the April meeting.

UPCOMING MEETING: Tuesday, April 4
